Interview With Maggi Gibson

Now here's my interview with Maggi Gibson - author of the Seriously Sassy series!

First up, how many books have you published so far and which is your favourite out of them?
Three children's books out so far, but I had published four collections of poetry for adults before that, and written for radio. I don't have a fave as such, but I'm always really enthusiastic about the one I'm working on at any given point.

So Maggi, where did you first start? What was your inspiration?
I first wrote a story for younger readers when I was tutoring a junior writing group. Then some time later I was teaching kids who'd got into a lot of trouble at school and I thought I should write a story based on their experiences. That was called Broken Dolls, but hasn't found a publisher.

What was the first book you've published?
Seriously Sassy.

How long did it take you to publish?
Writing the first book was very fast. From first rough draft to finished story was about 4 months. Then I got a publishing deal. Then there was a l-o-o-o-o-ong wait before Seriously Sassy came out in April 2009.

How long have you wanted to be an author for?
I kind of wanted to be an author - and a ballerina and an Olympic swimmer and a dozen other things from I was about nine years old. But i didn't think people like me - I was from a very ordinary family - ever did exciting things like that!

How long on average does it take you to write a book? How long on average does it take you to get a good idea?
I find ideas easy. My head's always teeming with them. But shaping them into a book is another thing.  Sometimes a book can take a year, at other times a few months. Some just come out easier than others. It also depends on what else you have to do. My mum was ill in 2010 and that made it hard to get lots of writing done.

What is your favourite book written by somebody else?
One of my faves is Scarlett by Cathy Cassidy. I love Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michelle Paver. I like Sophia Bennett's books too. And a classic favourite is Anne of Green Gables.

Have you had any other jobs, or wanted to have another job?
I studied languages at university, then taught French and German in secondary schools. I taught English in Paris too, which was fun.  I also specialised in teaching children with behavioural issues, which was very demanding but rewarding.

Have you ever wanted to be somebody else?
No, not at all. I think it's important to love the person you are!

How did you cope as a teenager, I mean, how did you do with spots and stuff?
Aaaaargh! The spots!!! Sometimes I was a spot-free zones, other times I was a pizza-faced monster. That was hard. I was very, very shy too for a while. I hated having to speak to strangers. I couldn't hold eye contact and I muttered and turned raspberry. But on the plus side, I had a great group of friends and we had lots of fun. That's what I try to recapture in my writing.

What is your most treasured possesion? Why?
Ooooh, that's a hard one. I have my Mum's engagement ring, and that means a lot to me. But so does the keyring my daughter gave me 17 years ago - it says 'Number One Mum' on it! But it's important to remember these are only things. I treasure people much more. And I lose things all
the time...

Who is your favourite author?
My fave author for grown ups is called Margaret Atwood. My fave for younger readers has to be my super friend, Cathy Cassidy.

Is Maggi Gibson your REAL name??
It is! Well, that is, I was named Margaret McRoberts. What a mouthful! I shortened Margaret to Maggi when I was teen and trying to work out who I was, then I changed my surname to Gibson when I married my first husband, Jim Gibson.

Why did you want to become an author?
I LOVED books and reading when I was a child, so being an author, being able to offer the pleasure of reading to young readers seemed like an important thing to do. I like  being my own boss too, and as a writer I am.

Have you ever got any fan-presents?
Not many, but those I have had are lovely. A bag of chocolate mice and a lovely thing I don't know what to call! It's my name on wooden beads, laced with other coloured beads. (I don't have the choccy mice any more!)

How many pets have you got? Have they influenced your writing in any way?
i live in the city now, so don't have any. But when my children were growing up we lived out in the country and had dogs, cats, a huge white rabbit, ducks, hens, hamsters and a guinea fowl! I always have at least one animal in my stories, and i base them on pets I used to have. Brewster in the Seriously Sassy books is based on my lovely old black lab/collie cross, Bramble.

What do you do when your stuck on what to write?
I eat chocolate mice! Seriously though, I take a break, go for a walk, do anything except think too much about the problem. Usually my subconscious mind sorts the problem out, then I can get wired into the story again.

Do people chase after you in the streets and beg you for autographs?
Haha! No. I'm not sure if I would like that. Though I did ask Scottish singer Paulo Nutini for his autograph when I saw him in Fopp at Christmas. It was for my daughters, so I had to ask him to do two!

Do you have a special writing place?
Not really. But I only write onto my laptop, Janey-Mac. Anywhere I can be comfortable and warm and have Janey-Mac plugged in works for me. I do have a desk, but there's so much clutter on it...

Have you got any tips for young writers?
Read lots of books. Some books are better than others. Try to work out why you think that is, and you'll start to learn the secrets of how to make a story work. Then play at writing. Have fun with it. And if you really want to do it, keep trying!

Interview With Luisa Plaja!

Oh yes, I really got an interview wit Luisa Plaja!

Hello Luisa, how are you today? Thank you so much for letting me interview you.
I'm fine, thank you. Thank you for interviewing me!

First up, how many books have you published so far and which is your favourite out of them?
I've had seven books published, plus an online e-book. I can't choose a favourite - I'm really fond of each one for slightly different reasons! Maybe I'll say Split by a Kiss, because it was my first book, or Kiss Date Love Hate, because it's the most recent!

So Luisa, where did you first start? What was your inspiration?
I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember, and I was inspired by the books I read and loved when I was very little.

What was the first book you've published? How long did it take you to publish?
My first book to be published was Split by a Kiss. I started writing it in summer 2005. It was accepted for publication by Random House in 2006 and it came out two years later.

Does it cost much to publish? How much did you earn at first?
Authors get an 'advance' - a sum of money from the publisher for their work. It's not usually a very large amount.

How long have you wanted to be an author for?
I've always wanted to be an author, but I'd heard how hard it is to be published and I used to think it was an impossible dream. I'm very glad I was wrong!

How long on average does it take you to write a book? How long on average does it take you to get a good idea?
Ideas pop up constantly, so I'd say that takes no time at all! Writing takes much longer, especially because I write several drafts of each book and I always rewrite and edit a lot. I think I take six months to a year, on average, before I have a draft that's ready to submit. An exception to this was the online e-book I wrote for Fiction Express, where I had to produce a new chapter every week for eleven weeks until the book was complete. That was a fun challenge!

What is your favourite book written by somebody else?
I love so many books that it's impossible to narrow it down to just one. I can list some of my favourite authors, though: Sarra Manning, Meg Cabot, Rachel Vail, Hilary Freeman, Jaclyn Moriarty, Simmone Howell, Cath Crowley... and more!

Have you had any other jobs, or wanted to have another job?
Yes, I've had lots of jobs. I've mostly worked with words and language. I've edited dictionaries, subtitled television and films for people with hearing difficulties, and developed computer software for speech recognition.

Have you ever wanted to be somebody else?
Yes, I've had my moments! I used to love the story of Freaky Friday when I was growing up, but instead of wanting to swap places with my mother, I would daydream about what it would be like to live the lives of my friends.

How did you cope as a teenager, I mean, how did you do with spots and stuff?
I was an awkward teenager and I struggled with lots of things. I think reading and writing helped me to escape a bit from my life whenever I needed to.

Why did you want to become an author?
I love writing, and the thought of other people reading and enjoying my stories is amazing!

Have you ever got any fan-presents?
No, but I get lovely emails and I really appreciate every single one.

How many pets have you got? Have they influenced your writing in any way?
I had a goldfish when I was little, and my son has a tank full of small fish now. I don't think they've had any influence on me, but they're quite calming to look at when I'm stuck!

What do you do when you're stuck on what to write?
I try to relax (not always by looking at the fish!) and I try to take the pressure off myself, allowing myself to write anything at all. That usually gets the words flowing again.

Do people chase after you in the streets and beg you for autographs?
Haha, no!#

Do you have a special writing place?
No, I write anywhere and anytime I can.

Have you got any tips for young writers?
Enjoy stories! Read a lot, write a lot, watch films and drama, listen to song lyrics. Keep a lookout for story snippets whenever you can - overheard conversations on the bus, newspaper articles, your Great-Aunt Mona's tales about the troublesome neighbours... Anything! Jot ideas in a notebook and then, when you have a few, try combining them in interesting ways.

Writing Tips Off THESE Faboo Authors..

First up - enter my competition guys! Click HERE!

Karen King, author, gave me the tips of...

I've put some writing tips on my website but the best tip I think I can give you is to never settle for the first idea, keep tweaking it and stretching it until you come up with something really different.

And Julie Sykes, another author, said...

You're NEVER to old for any sort of book. I have friends in their 70's who still read and collect picture books.

If you want to be an author then you should start now! Read as much as you can and lots of different genres. It's also good to get out and about as it makes your writing more real if you've experienced things - like walking in the wind or rain, playing in the snow, knowing how a town feels different from the country, the seaside etc.

Write as often as you can too. Buy or make a notebook and write down things you see or hear that would make good story ideas. Names that you like etc.

And keeping a diary is also a good thing for a writer to do.

Then Judi Curtin said...

1. Read lots
2. Practice writing whenever you can.

So there you go!

YET ANOTHER BLOG AWARDDDDDDD(:

From the past week or so I have gained THREE lovely blog awards. However, since I am on my Awarder's blog at the moment, the first award I'm posting about is the Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

Emily from Emily's Chronicles gave me this FABOO award, but as always with an award you get the award rules:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you.
2. Place the award on your site
3. Share 7 random things about yourself.
4. Nominate 15 blogs. Let them know they’ve been nominated and how to accept the award.

Okay so #1... Done.

#2... Also done.

But #3? Hmm.....

1) Today I got a rejection letter from Vogue saying I'm too young to work and help on their magazine in their offices. Five years too young, in fact. (Sympathy comments, please)

2) I also got rejected by Models One today. Apparently I'm 'not what we're looking for'. Dreams. Over.

3) I just found out that we can only take four other GCSE's of our choice at our school! O: !!!! How unfair is that?!?!?!

4) My dog has one of those cone things around his neck because he keeps chewing his tail. Haha he looks so funny(:

5) Leading off Point#1, I have, however, been accepted into another magazine. Not as famous as Vogue, but probably a magazine your parents buy from the corner shop.. Details soon(:

6) Six days until my book is publised! Even more details even sooner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7) I am completely failing in Spanish. Seriously, I even said 'hello' was 'aloha'. That's Hawaiian!

And now for #4....

I'm going to nominate...

Everyone on my sidebar! And really whoever else wants to own this FABOO award. I'm guessing that's not how you're meant to do it but... FIFTEEN?!!?!?!?! Come ON, guys!!

So you're now looking at a VERY INSPIRING blog. Well, it was bound to come around sooner or later.
