why i don't like receiving flowers

Last Saturday, a groundbreaking discovery was made.

I had just come back from having more of these cute little things attached to my veins,

when a large majority of my family met at my house for a small get-well-soon-get-together thing. I was surrounded by people, chocolate, Pringles and well-meaning copies of Vogue magazine. And, for the first time ever, I had been bought flowers.

Now, don't get me wrong, flowers are cute when they're alive and growing in soil, flourishing in the sunshine and swaying beneath the clouds, buuuut when they're been grown purely to be ripped out of their roots, tied with ribbon and wrapped in roughly manufactured plastic covers, I kind of don't want to be the beholder of them.

I only realised that fact then, as I was handed a bunch of soon-to-be-dying yellow sunflowers. The realisation slapped me twice across my cheek and then once across the back of my head. It was obvious. I don't like receiving flowers.

Of course, I smiled and thanked my cousin for the DYING METAPHOR OF OUR FRIENDSHIP, but inside, I was internally groaning.

I don't want to sound like a horrible person, but for me to receive a bunch of dying lifeforms is a bit disheartening. Like, "here you go Amy; I know you're ill and would love some Ben & Jerry's or the newest Rachel Caine novel, but I'm going to be conventional and buy you something completely pointless, the one thing that billions of people are constantly bought again and again. It took exactly zero percent thoughtfulness and imagination, and it's going to slowly suffer as you watch it die - there's nothing you can do of course - but hey, here's some flowers. Get well soon!"

Okay, so that might be a slight exaggeration, and please don't think that I'm ungrateful as the sunflowers are beautiful, but at the same time, I would be a lot happier with a movie or even a cactus. Save the dying flowers for someone else.

Does anyone else in the whole entire universe agree with me, or am I the only conventional-flower-gift hater out here? Let me know!

  1. I know! That's the same reason why I hate getting flowers; it's like, "Oh, they're so pretty! But they're going to die! And pretty things aren't meant to die! *starts crying*" It just makes me cringe real bad. (Sorry for the late reply of the comment you left on your blog; I would love to follow each other's blogs!)

  2. I've never been given flowers so I've not thought about it! I don't think it would really bother me...but...hehe, I can be a bit heartless I guess. >_< I was picking dandelions with my nephew today, but he kept throwing them away and I wanted to make them into a bunch. So I am a little sentimental. ;)

  3. You are probably the first person I ever met (physically or over the internet) who shares my thought about flowers. I feel the same about getting them and always can't help but feel sad. Nice to see your opinion here!

  4. I'm not a big flower person either, but I do love sunflowers :) I was given a small cactus a few years ago though, and it's still alive! So I now give cactus's instead of flowers :D

  6. Amy!! You always manage to make me laugh. I agree with you 100%. I've never been a huge fan of flowers because, like you said, they die. But the way you phrase it is too funny. Can't wait for your next post!

P.S. I have no idea what GFC. Maybe that's something you can teach me ;)

  7. Haha. I hate getting flowers too! Every time someone says they're gonna buy flowers or they're selling flowers I cringe, because it really is POINTLESS!! Chocolates are way better, or anything is really. Loving 'the dying metaphor of our friendship' Too true ;)

    1. Plotted plants are cool, but I'd still rather cacti or a small tomato tree or something.. sigh, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm a bit too picky!

  21. I actually like being given flowers/getting myself flowers. Really just because I love taking photos of them and I think they're pretty. But I laughed out loud throughout this post, and that's totally true about them being grown only to be ripped from the ground.

AND, those torture devices are totally adorable (can you smell the sarcasm?). I hope you get those things off soon, and feel better!
